The Israel-U.S. Iran Gamble: Four Tracks, Four Failures
This article is based entirely on information published in open sources, including reporting by the New York Times, CNN, Haaretz, the Jerusalem Post, Channel 12, Ynet, the Times of Israel, Middle East Eye, Foreign Affairs, Small Wars Journal, Al Jazeera, the Atlantic Council, Reuters, Axios, Bloomberg, Foreign Policy, NBC News, and Wikipedia’s documented summaries of the 2026 Iran war and Kurdish-Iranian crisis. No claims in this article originate with the author. All assertions are drawn from and attributed to named publications.
Israel-U.S. went to war against Iran in February 2026 on a plan conceived and developed by Israel, then sold to Trump by Netanyahu and the Mossad. The objective, stated publicly by both men, was not simply to destroy nuclear facilities and missile arsenals. It was to bring down the Islamic Republic itself. Six months later, the regime is still standing, its successor leadership is functioning, and the Mossad director has dismissed three of his agency’s most senior officials.
On August 6, 2026, Mossad Director Roman Gofman removed the head of the Intelligence Directorate and the head of the Iran Division, both centrally involved in developing the plan. Channel 12 reported the dismissals followed an internal review directly linked to what it described as a “failure to achieve the goal of toppling the Iranian regime” (Channel 12, August 6, 2026). Earlier, Gofman had also dismissed deputy director “Aleph,” a 22-year Mossad veteran. Three senior officials gone within weeks of a new director taking office could be read as reorganization, as Gofman’s office described it, or as accountability for a strategy that failed. The distinction matters because one answer protects Netanyahu and the other does not.
A Prediction Built on Wishful Thinking
The story behind those dismissals starts well before August. Both David Barnea, Mossad chief from 2021 to June 2026, and his successor Roman Gofman shared the assessment that war with Iran could trigger the swift collapse of the Islamic Republic (CNN, April 14, 2026). Barnea played a central advisory role in the lead-up to the February 28 strikes and, according to the New York Times, pitched both Netanyahu and Trump on the idea that the assassination of Iranian leaders combined with intelligence-led operations could mobilize domestic opposition and bring down the regime. In his final public statement before leaving office, Barnea said Israel’s mission was incomplete and that the commitment would only be fulfilled when the regime was replaced (Jewish Chronicle, April 15, 2026).
Barnea told the Israeli cabinet that regime change was most likely within a year. The Jerusalem Post noted he presented this with caveats, but the operative bottom line was clear: the Islamic Republic was fragile enough to fall (Jerusalem Post, March 24, 2026).
Four Tracks, Four Failures
The Kurdish track. The Mossad’s plan centered on the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan, formed on February 22, 2026, which brought together five major Iranian Kurdish parties based in northern Iraq: the PDKI, PAK, PJAK, Khabat, and Komala (Wikipedia, 2026 Kurdish-Iranian Crisis). According to Daily Sabah, the Mossad armed these fighters with weapons seized from Hamas and Hezbollah (Daily Sabah, March 2026). PJAK, an offshoot of the PKK with the most battle-hardened fighters, was considered the operational core (Atlantic Council, March 6, 2026). The Mossad expected thousands of young Kurds to join, turning into a mass movement that could reach Tehran (Ynet, August 2026). It did not happen. Turkish pressure on Trump and the Kurdistan Regional Government stopped the offensive before it gained momentum (Daily Sabah, March 2026). The Jerusalem Post assessed bluntly: “The Kurds are a small and remote minority in Iran. They cannot be assigned to remove the regime. The Mossad should have realized this” (Jerusalem Post, June 12, 2026).
The Ahmadinejad track. The New York Times reported that Israel engaged in a multi-year effort to recruit former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as an alternative leader. Barnea personally met Ahmadinejad at an academic conference in Hungary, with a European ally providing diplomatic cover (Times of Israel, July 13, 2026). On the first day of the February strikes, Israeli forces struck Ahmadinejad’s bodyguards in an attempt to free him from house arrest. A former president, the thinking went, would carry more credibility inside Iran than any exile. Ahmadinejad did not seize power. He attended Khamenei’s funeral (Iran International, July 2026). New Lines Magazine reported on August 10, 2026 that his whereabouts remain murky and that his silence since the war’s start has been conspicuous.
The Pahlavi track. During the June 2025 twelve-day war, Israel operated a Persian-language digital influence campaign promoting Reza Pahlavi using fake social media accounts and AI-driven bots posing as Iranian citizens (Ynet, May 2026). The operation continued into the winter. When protests erupted at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on December 28, 2025, triggered by the collapse of the rial, Pahlavi called from the United States on January 6 for Iranians to take to the streets and chant slogans simultaneously at 8pm on January 8 and 9 (Iran International, January 6, 2026). Demonstrations became violent and so did the crackdown. Amnesty International described January 2026 as the deadliest period of repression in Iran in decades. HRANA reported at least 6,221 killed and more than 42,300 arrested (UConn Today, February 2026). Whether the violence was instigated by Pahlavi’s calls, by embedded agents, by organic protest momentum, or by a combination of all three remains contested. The Iranian government blamed foreign agents. Independent investigators documented unexplained armed figures among the crowds. The diplomatic correspondent of Israel’s Channel 14 reported that “foreign actors are arming protesters in Iran with live firearms, which is the reason for the hundreds of regime personnel killed” (Channel 14, cited in SWPRS, March 2026). That claim has not been independently verified. What is documented is that Pahlavi’s “final call,” the signal he had told Iranians to await before rising up, never came. The regime survived. Pahlavi remained in Paris.
Neither Israel nor the United States formally committed to installing him. Trump made that clear in a Reuters Oval Office interview: “He seems very nice, but I don’t know how he’d play within his own country” (Reuters, January 14, 2026). Pahlavi was a willing participant who served the operation’s media arm effectively. He was never the operational plan.
The media track. Promoting an exile who had not set foot in Iran in nearly half a century required a sustained media campaign. Two Persian-language satellite channels carried it. Iran International, a London-based Farsi-language channel funded by Saudi interests, became the primary broadcast platform for the operation. Barak Ravid, a journalist for Axios, stated on X that “the Mossad regularly uses this media outlet in its information war,” the most significant independent confirmation of the relationship, though the full nature of that relationship has not been formally investigated by any independent body. Haaretz reported that Israel had built an organized infrastructure to shape Iranian public opinion and turn domestic anger into a regime-change tool (Haaretz, cited in Middle East Monitor, May 2026). During the February strikes, allegations emerged that the network was communicating coordinates of targeted locations through its reporting. Iran designated Iran International a terrorist organization in 2022. Its parent company Volant Media UK had accumulated losses exceeding £410 million over five years, with £482 million owed to related entities, figures reported in the Financial Times and cited across multiple outlets (Financial Times, May 2026). Manoto, the second major Persian-language satellite channel, specialized in entertainment and nostalgia programming that over years rehabilitated the Pahlavi era for Iranian audiences with no direct memory of pre-revolutionary Iran. Foreign Policy described Manoto as having “convinced Iran the Shah was Great” (Foreign Policy, cited in Wikipedia). Both channels were described by Bloomberg in January 2026 as having “emerged as explicitly monarchist, anti-regime and pro-Israel broadcasters, becoming one of the most effective propaganda weapons against the Islamic Republic and a major boost to Pahlavi’s image inside Iran.” The Iranian public watched both channels. It did not rise up.
What the Failure Reveals
Before the war began, then-Israel chief of staff Herzi Halevi and Military Intelligence Directorate chief Aharon Haliva told Netanyahu in closed discussions that Israel had “an extremely limited ability to deliberately engineer regime change in a country such as Iran” (Ynet, August 2026). The plan proceeded despite those objections.
The regime did not fracture. Minority mobilization produced no decisive force. Ahmadinejad attended a funeral instead of seizing power. Pahlavi stayed in Paris. The assassination of Khamenei produced a successor government that has continued to function as a state, demand U.S. base withdrawals from the Gulf, and consolidate its position over the Strait of Hormuz.
Haaretz reported that sources inside the Mossad described Gofman’s dismissals as intended to shield Netanyahu from blame (Haaretz, August 9, 2026). The operation was premised on dangerously optimistic assumptions about Iranian fragility (Small Wars Journal, April 2026; Middle East Eye, March 2026). Foreign Affairs noted that U.S. policymakers have long misunderstood Iran, arguing that “economic strangulation backed by military pressure will create a democratic opening,” a belief the magazine described as a persistent misreading of Iranian political reality (Foreign Affairs, August 2026). The plan was moved forward by months at Netanyahu’s insistence to capitalize on the protests, despite private doubts among senior Trump administration officials about its viability (Wikipedia, Regime Change Efforts in the 2026 Iran War). As Ynet concluded: “The regime can say it won, because it survived.” The officials who conceived the plan are gone; the officials who set its objectives are not.
